Rambles: A Short Story

In the not so far distant past, two intrepid young ladies woke up with a grand idea. A walk to Ireland sounds a fine plan to me, said one to the other. No doubt, the woodland creatures who overheard this wild scheme shook their heads and muttered, "A walk to Ireland? Preposterous!" Ireland, is, after all, an island. Who would think it possible or dare to try? But the challenge did not daunt either of these two intrepid young ladies, and so, the two set off on an impossible trek.
Any passersby. sheep, or horses who bothered to look up that day would have witnessed two girls, one a wisp, a tiny thing, and the other a wee bit taller, rambling through fen and glen, field and furrow.

At last, with only a few wrong turns and misadventures (Is it too much to ask for a street sign or two? cried one), the two intrepid girls arrived at their goal. They stopped before a sign, which proclaimed, "Welcome to Donegal!"
 "Thank you," they returned.

"But now that we are here, we will seek further still and discover what lies beyond this friendly,
yet stony wall."

Already they'd accomplished many feats: journeyed through hostile territory, discerned the deceptive lack of signage, mastered difficult terrain. And already they'd learned one important lesson. Friendly the country seemed. Yet, deception lies in wait just around the corner.

Indeed, no sooner then they passed the friendly little stone wall, did they encounters object hurtling towards them at blazing speed. The two intrepid young girls dived and dashed, darted and dove as they avoided the massive missiles. Weaving through the chaos, they sought a way past the line of fire. But they could not find another, less dangerous path through Donegal.

This, they discovered, was their great quest, their great challenge. Finding the mysterious path of safety, in the midst of one of woe. They wandered further east, only to discover the end of the footpath. The wandered to the south with the same result.

Eventually, the two intrepid young girls decided to turn back. And only then did they discover what they sought.

Through many tests they had passed. And now they'd discovered, with great triumph, this little secret: a quiet, peaceful place; a secret vale.

A land flowing with sheep...

Eggs....

And horses!
